Do the Top Three Songs Really Deserve to Be in the Top Three?
As you probably know, the iTunes “Top Three” consists of the three most downloaded songs. They may be the most popular, but are they the most well-written? If you listen carefully to these songs or even look up the lyrics, you will definitely have your answer. The number one song right now is “Hotline Bling” by Drake. It opens with, “You used to call me on my, you used to, you used to you used to call me on my cell phone, late night when you need my love…and I know when that hotline bling.” So far, the song consists of just five repetitive lines about a girl calling Drake’s cell phone. He then says, “I know when that hotline bling.” What does that even mean? Some sites suggest that it refers to his cell phone ringing in the middle of the night—the word “bling” is a term to convey the actual ringtone of his phone. The chorus goes on to repeat these verses. I, however, can think of numerous songs written stronger than “Hotling Bling” that deserve the number one spot on the charts. Don’t get me wrong, Drake does have some well-written songs. But this is not one of them.
The second song in the top three is, “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber. The chorus’s lyrics begin with, “What do you mean, ohh ohh ohh, when you nod your head yes, but you wanna say no, what do you mean? Hey yeah, when you don’t want me to move, but you tell me to go, what do you mean?” I think everyone is able to realize that these are mindless lyrics that hardly make sense. It seems as though Bieber released this song out of nowhere for the sole purpose of performing it at the VMAs. That may be why this song is just a bunch of meaningless words scrambled together and set to a catchy beat. After listening to this song, I’m just happy that it’s not number one.
The last song in the top three is “The Hills” by The Weeknd. This song does contain explicit lyrics, but also many personal ones. This song is the black sheep out of the top three because it actually conveys intelligent thought. And although The Weeknd is often considered to be very similar to Drake, his songs aren’t only rap, and they do feature some very well-thought-out and unique verses. Don’t get me wrong, all three of these artists are talented. But maybe, hopefully, next time they’ll have songs worthy of the top three with lyrics to match.
