On Carly Fiorina

Carly Fiorina, a once unknown GOP presidential candidate, is seeing an exponential surge in popularity after her stand-out performance in the recent Republican debates. At press time, Fiorina is ranked second in the GOP national polls with a 15% support rate—an overwhelming increase since her 3% rate early this month. Her biggest competitor is Donald Trump, who is currently taking the lead at 24%. However, while Fiorina’s percentages keep rising, Trump’s have been decreasing up to 8% this month.

Fiorina’s main goal as president would be to bridge the gap between “regular people and the political class.” Fiorina herself has no background in politics; her resume is mostly in the business field. She has worked for AT&T and was CEO of Hewlett-Packard, an American global information technology company.

Fiorina holds “mainstream, conventional Republican views about public policy,” including, but not limited to:

  • Climate change/global warming – While Fiorina does believe in global warming and the human involvement in its rate of occurrence, she insists that government should have “limited access” to creating climate change policies.
  • Taxation – Fiorina has stated that she wants to reduce taxes and close loopholes that benefit the wealthier class.
  • Immigration – Fiorina has expressed her support for the DREAM Act, which would give legal status to people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. However, she believes that all other illegal immigrants should be deported and that there should be increased security patrolling the U.S./ Mexico border.
  • Abortion – Fiorina has openly criticized Planned Parenthood and abortions taking place after 20 weeks (with exception to cases of rape, incest or if the mother’s life is in danger). She garnered criticism for wrongly identifying a video that depicted Planned Parenthood employees harvesting organs of an unborn fetus. The existence of this video was never confirmed.
  • Gun Control – Fiorina is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. She has repeatedly criticized the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

If Carly Fiorina’s support continues to grow at its present rate, she could be a viable contender for the GOP nomination – and even the presidency.
