Bloomberg for President 2016?

One of the most interesting elections America has ever seen may have just gotten even more interesting. There is speculation that the former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, will enter the race for the President of the United States for the term of 2016.  Bloomberg is an independent, and in the past has supported both the Republican and Democratic Parties but eventually decided not to side with either. Although in the past Bloomberg has denied all interest in seeking the Presidential position, he recently conducted a secret survey attempting to gather where he would stand in the polls. The survey was leaked and became national news but there still has been no confirmation.

This year, the top candidates for each party have been very extreme. Sanders classifies himself as a socialist, Clinton is very far left and Cruz, Trump and Rubio are very far right. Many believe Bloomberg would be an ideal option and have a good shot running for President as a centrist candidate. If Bloomberg does decide to run, he must decide so by March; otherwise, it will be impossible to be elected.

Bloomberg is only being speculated as a candidate; however, it is important that his views are made knowledgeable to everyone because there is a possibility he could become a serious contender. Bloomberg is pro-choice and supported by many women’s groups. He believes that “reproductive choice is a fundamental human right.” Bloomberg supports same-sex marriage and is a strong proponent of civil rights.  Education is a top priority to Bloomberg, as he has met with Obama to discuss policies for education and work for a bill be raised for higher incomes. If Bloomberg does decide to run for office, his ideas may set him apart from the other candidates in the running.

He supports the movement against global warming and recognizes it as a threat to the earth, believing cities must take the first fundamental step to combat climate change. Bloomberg is very supportive of gun control. He believes background checks are a necessity and guns should be outlawed and kept away from criminals.  Healthcare is an important issue to the former mayor, who argues it should be provided universally.  Bloomberg believes that illegal immigrants living in the United States statuses should be normalized; however, there should be tighter border control.  Bloomberg believes taxes should be raised for higher incomes.

Senior Haley Tract believes that although it would be difficult to win the election, Bloomberg could gain support. She says,  “I think he would be the most moderate of the candidates. He has liberal views on social issues and is more conservative for the economy. If he was running as an Independent, it might be difficult to win, but I think if he tried he would got support from people who aren’t related to certain interest groups.” Although it would be a difficult path to the nomination, it is very possible for Bloomberg to be the next president if he decides to run
