Walt Whitman Powder Puff 2017
On Thursday, October 26th, juniors and seniors took to the field for Walt Whitman’s annual Powder Puff football game. A Whitman tradition, Powder Puff draws out school spirit and healthy competition. With over 1,000 people in attendance, this year’s Powder Puff was one of the largest to date. With tensions high, the junior and senior girls kicked off what would be a lively night.
During the first half of the game, the senior girls quickly pulled ahead scoring an incredible five touchdowns. The juniors were not so successful during the first half, the score being 35-to-zero in favor of the seniors by halftime.
Powder Puff’s halftime started with a wonderful performance by the junior boys as they entertained the crowd and boosted the morale of the junior team.
Next came the senior boys, one of the largest teams of Powder Puff-cheerleaders in Whitman history. Their impressive numbers and exciting routine captivated the audience.
The junior girls fought back during the final two quarters, scoring three touchdowns. The seniors would not let up, scoring another touchdown of their own, making the final score of the game 42 to 21. The senior cheerleaders also took the win for their routine, leaving the juniors defeated but ready to return next year to represent the senior class.
Mr. Varlamos, coach of the senior girls, stated that having “been part of 14 Powder Puffs, last night’s event ranked up there with the best in terms of the effort of both teams and the performances of both cheerleading groups”. Mr. Murphy, coach of the junior girls, explains that “Powder Puff of 2017 was the type of event that all principals dream of seeing at their school.” Mr. Murphy went on to point out the school spirit shown as a result of the event and how “the amount of pride that was shown throughout the event really shows the level of commitment and pride the students have towards Walt Whitman High School.”
