Super Mario Odyssey: The Biggest Mario Game of 2017!

With the Nintendo Switch console released in early March of 2017, The Nintendo Company realized that they needed a huge Mario game to show off the power of the Switch. So on October 27, the company released its biggest Mario game of the year, Super Mario Odyssey!

Super Mario Odyssey takes players on yet another exciting 3D adventure with the red plumber in overalls famously known as Mario. Taking place in a new location known as New Donk City, Princess Peach is once again captured by Bowser, who intends to force her to marry him. Mario must go save the damsel in distress, accompanied by his new partner Cappy, a spiritual being that possesses Mario’s hat and gives it eyes.

Similar to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey is based on a 3D free-roaming environment. The new mechanic of the game is Cappy, which enables Mario to swing his hat at most things in the game to possess them, like Goombas, Bullet Bills, Koopas, and even a dinosaur, gives Mario a new feature he can use to get through a level. Also a collecting game, the new release has players explore a vast environment to amass enough Power Moons to help fuel The Odyssey, a huge hat-shaped flying machine that allows Mario to travel from region to region. Additionally, players can collect Regional Coins: purple coins that can be exchanged for new outfits and hats for Mario to wear.

In other news, the original damsel in distress, Pauline, makes a comeback as mayor of New Donk City. She helps Mario in the beginning of the game by teaching players the controls and sings “Jump Up, Super Star,” the main theme song of the game. New bosses include the quadruple gang of Bunny Wedding Planners, who try to stop Mario in his path to victory. Also, new Kingdom bosses are implemented into the game as a final challenge once getting through a level. Ultimately, a final battle between Mario and Bowser takes place at the end of the game. Priced at $59.99, Super Mario Odyssey is a fairly large game, complete with new features and new characters, in addition to the same ones players have come to know and love.

Odyssey has fans in a craze, either already obsessively playing it, or doing their best to scrape up the $360 needed to buy a Switch and the game. Whitman junior Dylan Witt, who bought the game on the actual release date, often remains in the virtual world “for hours” and is “not planning on stopping,” feeling “a sense of nostalgia” while playing the game. Deja Ebalarosa is just happy that “Nintendo gave us a beautifully designed video game,” and Sebastian Esteves went so far as to say the game is “so worth [the] $60.” Obviously already very popular among fans, Super Mario Odyssey is expected to be the “game of the year,” according to netizens.

Nintendo has given the gift of a new Mario game for fans to enjoy and have fun with, in accordance with the wishes of former President Saturo Iwata, who passed away in 2015 due to cancer. Super Mario Odyssey is Nintendo’s biggest Mario game yet and the company is very proud to have released it. So everyone get ready to empty your wallets because it’s time to be a superstar and do the Odyssey!
