On Friday, February 9th, Whitman students showcased their talent at the Xanadu Collective Concert. And if you weren’t there then you missed out. The night demonstrated that our school is full of talented musicians and poets. If you think attending Xanadu would have been a boring way to spend your Friday, then you don’t understand what Xanadu is all about. Actually, one junior shared she “spent [her] Friday night cheering and dancing along to all of the fun songs performed.”
First off, Xanadu was more than just entertaining. Throughout the night, the songs ranged from heartfelt to, well, Suavemente. You could have sang along to the songs, whether they made you want to cry or laugh. Or you could have simply gotten up and danced with everyone.
It’s also important to acknowledge that everybody did amazing. With so few words, I can’t talk about every single one of the performances. But I can talk about some highlights. Julia Dean and Mason Peretson opened up the night with an instrumental version of Smooth Criminal. In a solo, Steven Granados sang Put Your Hand on My Shoulder. DJ Alo, Deanna, and Phillipe sang their original song named Heavy On my Heart. And not only did Mr. Yolango surprised everyone by performing, but even the school photographer Liz sang and showed her musical side. Of course, there were many other incredible performances.
Overall, it wasn’t a night to miss. If you couldn’t make it or didn’t want to go, then you should definitely consider attending next year. Thank you Mr. Pipolo and Mr. Varlamos for setting up such a great night!
