Do’s and Don’ts for Freshman Year

Tips to help you make the most out of your first year.

Do’s and Don’ts for Freshman Year
  • DON’T get stressed out by high school.

It may seem terrifying and overwhelming, but it really is just a giant version of middle school (with a little more freedom).

  • DO stay organized.

Utilize your agenda book or buy a planner. Manage your time wisely. Keep your assignments organized and get them in on time.

  • DON’T be afraid to ask your teachers for help.

Especially if you don’t understand what they’re saying or what you’re doing in class. It’s good to make connections and get as much help as possible. Even go to extra help every day if you have to.

  • DO get involved in what you’re passionate about.

If you love writing, look into Paw Print or Xanadu. Into sports? Try out for one of Whitman’s many athletic teams. Want to go into business? Join DECA. Love acting? Try out for a theater production. Whitman has many opportunities to offer after school, so take advantage of them.

  • DO go to school events.

Attend Homecoming, Powderpuff, Senior Follies, Girls Sports Night, after-school home games, and drama productions.

  • DON’T be afraid of talking to new people and making new friends.

These are the people you’re going to spend the next four years with.

  • DO enjoy yourself.

You have four years that’ll fly by before you enter adulthood. Make the most of it!

These tips might seem like what everyone has been telling you, but they really are the core elements to having a solid high school experience. We aren’t saying that you will never get frustrated with a topic, or a teacher, and we aren’t saying you will never have a bad day if you follow these do’s and don’ts. The point of high school is to get you ready for college, but it is also there to help you find you. Do what you love and what makes you happy. If you stay true to yourself, then the next four years will be all the more worthwhile.
