In hopes of gaining insight into Whitman students’ refusal to wear jackets, we sit down with Whitman seniors to see what they think.
With the temperature decreasing and frost creeping its way onto our windshields, it is safe to say that winter has arrived. Winter fashion consists of warm clothing such as sweaters, earmuffs, gloves, coats, and jackets meant to prevent the infamous side effects of a cold. However, Whitman students seem to be wearing everything but that.
If you arrive at 7:15 a.m. and look at the individuals walking towards the Main Office entrance you’d be confused as to what the weather is due to the differing attire of students. Outfits vary from skirts to t-shirts, hoodies to crewnecks, but not a jacket in sight.
Dedicated to uncovering the rationale behind this, we asked seniors what they thought Whitman students would be wearing this Winter, to which Senior Sophia Goldberg responded: “Not winter coats. Nobody wears winter coats.” Senior Emma Donovan agreed, saying, “A lot of sweatshirts and sweatpants.” But our question remained unanswered. So we interviewed more students, asking for their thoughts as to why many students avoid wearing heavy jackets. Emily Redelman, a senior, commented, “They don’t want to carry them and we don’t have enough time to go to our lockers.” Agreed.
While some questions remained unanswered, it can be said lockers and the hassle of “winter wear” is the source of the lack of winter jackets at Walt Whitman.
