Columbia University Ends Losing Streak with Blowout Win
When one thinks of the Ivy League, prestige, intelligence and hard work ethics come to mind. However, that academic mastery often comes at the expense of athletics. While other top schools in the country such as UCLA and USC are less known for their prestigious academic programs, they seem more relevant nationwide, and in general, more athletes apply there. There are exceptions, such as Jeremy Lin and Ryan Fitzpatrick, two individuals who started at Harvard and have found success in each of their respective sports. But a general statement can be made that Ivy League schools aren’t main competitors in sports, which is why Columbia University hasn’t won a football game since 2012. But on October 10, 2015, Columbia defeated Wagner 26-3.
Although maybe a twenty-four game losing streak for the Columbia Lions isn’t so bad. This isn’t even the university’s worst college football losing streak. Between 1983 and 1988 and a span of forty-four games, Columbia didn’t win a single game. But it would’ve been sad if they lost against Wagner, the team they had beaten. Although Wagner finished 7-4 last year, they haven’t won a single game this year. Columbia’s most recent season with a win, disregarding this season, was their 3-7 season in 2012. And their last winning season dates back to 1994, where Columbia miraculously had an 8-2 record.
The game itself was decided by getting off to a strong early start. The score was 26-0 due to long scoring drives and a Wagner fumble on their own two-yard line, leading to a quick touchdown.
This likely isn’t the start of a new streak, but it ended one that would’ve been painful to have for much longer. But the one thing to take away from this is: do not go to an Ivy League school for football.
