Apple’s New Night Shift Feature Gives Your Eyes a Rest

In the coming weeks, Apple will release iOS 9.3, a brand new version of their mobile operating system. The update brings a few changes to Apple’s user experience, including fingerprint protection for Notes and customization improvements for the News app. However, the most exciting feature of iOS 9.3 is Night Shift.

Night Shift is a new display mode that reduces the amount of blue light being emitted from the screen of any iOS device. In basic terms, Night Shift makes the screen yellow at night. Studies have shown that blue light from screens can negatively impact sleep, and 3rd-party apps like F.lux have offered screen dimming technologies for computers and jailbroken iOS devices for several years. With Night Shift, Apple has improved upon F.lux’s method, adding a toggle for quick access in iOS’s Control Center and allowing users to automatically enable the feature between sunset and sunrise.

With Night Shift, Apple hopes to reduce users’ eye strain and give their customers a good night’s sleep uninterrupted by their iPhones. Apple will likely release Night Shift with iOS 9.3 later this month.
