Girls Sports Night 2017

Many years ago, girls in Walt Whitman High School were not allowed to play sports. In response to this social restriction, the girls created Girls Sports Night (GSN) so they could compete. The event still exists today as a long standing tradition of our high school. This year, GSN will be held on March 3rd and is run by Mrs. Mahoney. Girls Sports Night is a competition between two teams, white and maroon. This event is limited to girls, and each girl may chose the team she wants to be on and the events she would like to participate in. Girls Sports Night offers a wide variety of activities, including calisthenics, cheerleading, tug-of war, volleyball, dodge ball, underclassmen relay, and senior musical chairs.
My name is Emma Weigele, and I am a sophomore at Walt Whitman High School. Last year, as a freshman, I participated in white calisthenics, white dodgeball, and white volleyball. Calisthenics is an activity in which your team captains compose a fun and entertaining dance that the team performs on the night of the event. The dance typically lasts about eight minutes, but the amount of planning, work, and effort that goes into the practices is incalculable. To participate in calisthenics you do not need to have taken prior dance lessons, have been on the school dance team, or have participated in an out-of-school dance team. Maroon calisthenics and white calisthenics are assigned an opposite theme, and then your captains compose a dance relating to your theme. For example, last year maroon calisthenic’s theme was love and white calisthenic’s theme was heartbreak. The dance incorporates a combination of songs, which can be heard coming from the gym every Tuesday through Friday after school for two hours. Last year’s performance was outstanding and everyone had an amazing time. GSN is an event that each and every girl from Whitman should participate in!
My name is Morgan Wagner, and I am also a sophomore at Walt Whitman High School. Freshman year, I participated in Girls Sports Night, competing in white volleyball, white dodgeball, and white tug-of-war. Unlike calisthenics and cheer, the other events do not require daily practices. All the events that I competed in were immensely exciting. Due to sports, I was unable to participate in both calisthenics and cheer. However, watching the phenomenal routines that my classmates spent hours on was extremely entertaining! Win or lose, Girls Sports Night is an awesome event for friendly competition with friends. I recommend everyone take part by either coming to watch or joining a team. I can not wait for this year’s Girls Sports Night, and I am hoping to participate in the same events as I did previously.
My name is Daniela Pasquarello, and I am currently a junior at Walt Whitman High School. GSN, in my opinion, is one of the best events Whitman has. Freshman and sophomore years, I participated in maroon tug-of war, dodgeball, and the underclassmen relay. I loved each and every event. It was fun to compete against my classmates and watch the amazing cheer and calisthenics routines. Due to having these great experiences in GSN and my involvement in Girls Leaders Organization, I applied to be the Maroon tug-of-war captain. When I got selected, I was ecstatic. This year our theme is work versus play and I cannot wait to create the shirts for my team. I encourage every girl out there to join any team in GSN!
