Artificial intelligence has been a catalyst of change in our society. Every day, people are using AI for purposes like work-related use and for personal use. Many people see AI as a glimpse into the future due to its rapid incorporation into many areas of society. One commonly discussed presence of artificial intelligence is that of its influence on education. While it can prove to be beneficial for students in the short term, its use is often a controversial topic due to its potential effects on the future of academics. Many believe that AI is ruining the education system as children are losing their obligation to use their own critical thinking skills due to the availability of such an effective and obtainable tool.
While students use AI to obtain exceptional grades in school, what will happen when they reach adulthood? Will AI become the foundation that society clings to in order to stay upright? Walt Whitman junior Timmy Treubig believes that eventually “AI (writing) [will]…. Become unrecognizable from human language” which will be detrimental to education. This terrible impact on education would be a result of students having access to a tool that allows them to progress through school by simply asking AI to complete their schoolwork for them rather than putting in real effort. While many view AI in a negative light when referring to education, others believe that artificial intelligence will leave a positive influence on education. Walt Whitman junior Landon Forlenza asserts that “AI will eventually be…a tool for learning” and schools must learn to “adjust to the future workforce.” Many people believe that artificial intelligence is inevitably going to become too influential to simply ignore and try to limit; therefore, it would be most beneficial for the education system to adapt to these changes rather than reject them.
Regardless of your opinions on the future implications of AI it’s difficult to ignore that as a society we are at a major turning point. Artificial intelligence is quickly spreading its roots in countless fields including education and we must decide whether to embrace or reject AI for educational purposes.
