2015 Proves To Be a Groundbreaking Year For Whitman Sports

2015 has proved to be an extremely memorable year for Walt Whitman sports.  It was a year where athletes pushed their hardest and worked as a team to achieve results.  This past year has definitely set high expectations for 2016.

The most notable victory of 2015 was the Boys Varsity Soccer Team winning State Championships.  Supported by tons of fans, they pulled through in the championship game to make Walt Whitman history.  The entire team fought hard and it was clear that years of hard work paid off.

Standout players Witman Hernandez, Michael Lorello, and Sean Zagorski helped seal the 5-1 win.  It was a momentous moment not just for the school, but the entire community.  The win has definitely inspired athletes all over the district to work to make this history for themselves.

Girls Varsity Soccer made many improvements this year as well, and hopes to make the playoffs next season after seeing their male counterparts succeed.  With many younger players working hard, success is in reach.

Volleyball focused on improving their players to seal several victories. Girls Volleyball won against Northport and Lindenhurst for the first time in years.  They raised hundreds of dollars in the annual Dig Pink fundraiser game, supported by a packed gym of cheering fans.

Boys Volleyball team many great victories with new players making a big impact.  Their Wounded Warriors game raised money for charity and the senior players finished their career in a fantastic way.

The Girls Field Hockey team had a memorable season as well.  Although they didn’t make it past the first round of playoffs, the many seniors on the team finished up the season strongly.  The year was filled with success as they beat many tough teams.  Field Hockey boasts young talent that will hopefully learn from the seniors and pull through next year.

One team that especially gained attention in 2015 is the Girls Swim Team, as Captain Emily Fung qualified for State Championships. This honor was well-earned after she finished in 4th place in the 100-meter backstroke.  Although this team was previously under the radar, its recent success is quickly proving how much their hard work paid off.

Looking forward to 2016, the Boys Basketball Team is currently into their winter season where they have had some fantastic wins.  So far, Matt Stockfeder, Matt Kleet and Willie Pedro have put Whitman forward with their great shooting and defensive playing.

2015 was a year where Whitman teams focused on improving individual skills and teamwork to achieve their goals.  Not every team accomplished everything they wanted to, but they still have the opportunities of 2016 to look forward to.  The coaches have no doubt that with enough effort, the teams will make Whitman and the South Huntington community proud.
