Whether you’re an involved, proactive student, or more laid back and unaware of Whitman’s events, most students know about Powderpuff.
The annual Powderpuff Carnival was a success, as always. The Carnival is held on Whitman grounds before the Powderpuff game and
all sorts of entertainment and food. This year’s Carnival had a circus performance, petting zoo, ax throwing, surfing and a photo booth. Carnival is also when Whitman clubs set up booths to promote their club or raise funds for charity. When asking Whitman students about their favorite booth at the Carnival, two students replied, “the Book Club table” because “it encourages kids to read.”
Powderpuff is an event enjoyed by Whitman students for several reasons. Some enjoy the competitive spirit of the event, some like dressing up and running with their class in the morning, and, as one Whitman student said, some like “seeing boys in skirts.”
Anticipation for the victory of the Senior’s was high; while interviewing the students of Walt Whitman, most students predicted the inevitable win of the Seniors. Some students justified the Senior win by declaring “the Seniors are better” while some mentioned the talent of the senior girls in the sport by voicing their opinion that “the Senior girls are scary.”
There was a tremendous amount of excitement leading up to Powderpuff this year, and you could practically smell the school spirit radiating through the halls, especially in the South Cafeteria during lunch periods. The cheerleaders for the Juniors and Seniors, Dr. Murphy and Mr. Varlamos, really contributed to the hype of the Juniors versus Seniors game.
While many predicted that the Seniors would take the win, many Juniors still had faith that they would prove everyone wrong.
Aiden D., Whitman Junior, asserts that “our class is simply better than the Seniors” and “everything they do, we do ten times better.” Keen A., Whitman Junior, remarks that she was “feeling the spirit in blue.” She claimed that “we’re better than them” and that “we have more spirit.”
However, some Juniors had lost hope before the carnival even started. Katie G., Whitman Junior, mentions how “their girls are more athletic,” and predicted that the Seniors would win the football game, but the Juniors would come back strong by winning the halftime show.
Demetri P., Whitman Junior, discusses how the Juniors have more players, but they “don’t know how to use them to their advantage” unless they “step up their game.” He also claims that the Seniors have always won and doubts the Juniors will win “unless the spirit is there.” Despite the spirit being there, the Seniors broke out to an early lead. The Juniors came back strong, even when they had half the amount of points as the Seniors at the start of the 4th quarter.
Even with a strong comeback by the Juniors, the game ended in a seven-point win by the Seniors. Both teams put in so much effort and put their best foot forward to achieve a final score of 56 to 49.
However, I pity next year’s Junior class, as the class of 2025 is poised for revenge! They may have lost this year, but they’ve shown that they won’t give up easily and will do everything in their power to come out victorious next year.
